Pool Deck Resurfacing: What to Ask for in a Quote

Textured concrete deck beside a backyard pool with damp splash near the coping

A pool deck is the one slab where a slippery finish can hurt someone. Decograde Concrete Resurfacing resurfaces pool surrounds in Canterbury-Bankstown, and this page lists what a quote for that work should cover, so you can compare two of them fairly.

Grip comes first

Australia’s slip-resistance standard, AS 4586, includes barefoot wet-ramp classes A, B and C, which are the ratings usually applied to pool surrounds. A smooth coat can be slipperier than the concrete it replaces, so ask what finish is proposed and what slip result the product has been tested to. A good supplier can show you a data sheet or a test report, and a contractor who cannot is giving you a guess. If a quote only says the finish is non-slip, ask for the document.

What the deck is made to survive

Splash-out puts pool water on the slab every time someone swims. Sun dries and fades the surface, and bare feet, furniture and cleaning add wear. Chemicals carried onto the concrete leave a chalky surface over the years. A coating built for a dry driveway can chalk or lift here, so ask whether the product is made for wet outdoor areas, and whether it suits chlorine or salt water, whichever your pool uses.

Preparation is most of the job

A new layer only holds on a clean, dry slab. Algae, mould, chalky residue and old coating all stop a bond. The quote should say how the deck is washed, how it is left to dry, and how cracks and chipped edges are repaired first.

The pool edge and coping

Where the deck meets the coping, work has to be neat and product must stay out of the water. Movement joints should stay as joints. If your work touches the pool barrier or the coping, check with your council or a certifier whether anything further applies, and ask the contractor who is responsible for that check.

When can you swim again?

Every product has its own dry and cure time before the deck may get wet. Ask for it in writing and take it from the manufacturer’s data sheet, not from a rule of thumb. Plan the work for a stretch when nobody needs the pool.

A checklist for the quote

  • The finish, its texture and its slip test result.
  • Washing, drying and repair steps before coating.
  • How the coping and joints are protected.
  • The sealer and when it needs renewing.
  • Dry time before swimming, and what happens if it rains.
